Prospective buyers should look for breeders only after they do a detailed investigation of the background of this designer dog breed. Currently there are different types of Labradoodle puppies on sale. But, time has altered the products on the market. A consumer will now find more generational and breed mixes. The variety of choices available can perplex uninformed buyers.

To understand what has transpired, the history of this designer hybrid is a good place to start. This history starts with Wally Conron, the breeder who pioneered the Labradoodle in Australia as a service dog for allergic people. During his time only some results met expectations. He retired. Kate Shoeffel, an enterprising NSW vet, began a program to improve upon his results. Her litters were exported to America. Americans have also purchased litters from Angela Wetzel Cunningham and her mother, Beverley Manners, who also tried to improve on the original litters. Angela breeds at Tegan Park and her mother at Rutland Manor.

Essentially there are two main types of Aussie Labradoodles currently available. The two basic types on offer are the Australian Labradoodle dogs being bred in Australia and American variants of the same hybrid. Before a puppy is selected there should be no confusion about what is available from sellers today.

An excellent starting point is by selecting the hybrid type. The range of generational crosses should be considered. Size and hair shade differences also need to be evaluated. There are medium, standard, or toy sizes available. There a host of coat shades to choose from. These now include red, gold, chalk, parchment, cream, caramel, silver, black, blue, cafe, chocolate, lavender, phantom, parti, abstract, multi patterned, brindle and sable. An in depth evaluation will narrow the options for buyers.

The original Labradoodle generation started with the F1 generation. These were born from a pairing of a pure bred Labrador Retriever and a pure bred Poodle. The next generation was an F1B produced by a Labradoodle F1 and a Poodle pairing. The Australian Labradoodle is an F1B pairing with a product of any generation or an F1B crossed with an approved parent breed. Approved parent breeds are the Irish Water Spaniel, Curly Coat Retriever, American or English Cocker Spaniel, in addition to the original Labrador and Poodle breeds.

Aussie Doodles are distinct from earlier crosses as their bloodline is not limited to the original paired breeds. They reflect the progression of breeding programs working to produce a breed standard. The basic characteristic of the Aussies is consistency. As breeding has become more sophisticated, two types of fur have appeared. The variants are fleece or wool variations. For the severely allergic, wool works better. A diligent seller will allow a purchaser to screen dander and hair samples for assessment.

The ALAA registry in Australia and the ILA registry accept this hybrid. Both are trustworthy sources of help for baffled buyers. To remain clear of any regrets, only trusted breeding programs of Australian Labradoodles for sale in Indiana should be approached.
