Information On How A Dog Became The Best Friend Of Man

By Abraham Mohammed

People can have the proof that the ancestor of the modern dog was part of Eurasian wolves, which lived on planet Earth fifteen to forty thousand years ago. Before the first farmers appeared, in times in which humans lived as hunter-gatherers, wolves began to be domesticated. Food and shelter were things that were crucial for the survival of both species. In various writings from the past, canines are described as beings that were used for protection, fighting, watching and hunting.

People may not be able to find clear details on the ways in which dogs became the best friends of humans. However, in 2002, many DNA verifications were made and the subjects were hundreds of dogs. The results showed that the most diversity exists in East Asian species. A theory was developed about East Asia being the location where the link between man and canines was established. There are studies that can confirm dogs were tamed even 32,000 years in the past. The Ice Age Paleolithic is the corresponding period, in which the primary job of humans was hunting.

It can be important to know when the transition was made for people from the stage of hunter-gatherers to the one that involves agriculture, in order to find the truth about the true origins and rise of man. The point is that dogs had a crucial role in the transition. Without the domestication of animals and plants, the change may not have been possible.

Even if there is a clear view on how cows, goats, sheep and pigs were tamed, there is no obvious perspective on canines. In order to uncover this mystery, studies are still being made. According to some researchers, the most recent wild dog originates from North America, from long before any humans lived there. The general idea is that the first dog had a wolf father and a jackal mother.

New studies show that dogs are very intelligent and this contributed a lot to the evolution of man. People needed the relationship with the domestic animal for getting in the state they are today. The reason for which individuals have chosen the primitive dog to tame and make their best friend is a mystery today, but there are some theories that refer to the environmental conditions and needs that existed at the time of transition.

In the need for food and shelter, both canines and humans had to hunt animals with the use of teeth or stone hatchets. Families had to be fed in order to survive. The primitive dog lived in caves or in tree trucks and it approached human camp fires in coldest seasons, when it became hungry and did not find any food. You can imagine how good could be for a starving animal to find some bones that a human left near the fire, because they could not be chewed by people.

There is a possibility that entire groups of wolves were hosted by humans during cold nights. The warmth brought by a campfire and a few bones were enough to convince a dog to stay. While hunting, a special characteristic, an improved smell sense, was observed at canines and this made people think it can be a great advantage when catching other animals. A probable happening can be the story of a puppy that was adopted by humans and trained for hunting. The adult could become a true helper of man.

After reaching full maturity, the domesticated wolf could have realized how wonderful life among humans may be. Obeying the commands of a master and help provided in hunting sessions may be enough for getting a regular meal. The benefits of owning a dog were surely seen by other people and they become tamers themselves. At one particular time, there were many canines in human communities, almost equal to the number of people.

During thousands of years of evolution, the appearance and shape of dogs change a lot, but humans also look now different than before. Canines started to bark instead of howling and became more and more dependent on humans. After agriculture was invented, man found new ways in which dogs could be helpful, such as guarding other domestic animals: sheep, cows, goat, etc.

But, in order to be able to go hunting while dogs guarded sheep, people taught canines not to eat the domestic animals. Protecting sheep was not enough. Humans needed guardians for other things as well, such as homes, properties and families.

After dogs learned to fight for their masters, they became their best friends. There are references about the companionship between the two species of mammals that date 1500 B. C. The evidence can be found in pictures and texts, in the tombs of ancient Egypt, Pompeii ruins and Ethiopia. The domesticated canines were considered gods and kings in the past.

The dog is mentioned in the Bible and the Roman history. People can find pottery from American Indians and tapestry from England and France. There are many races in the pictures. It can be interesting how they have the same primitive ancestor.

Human characteristics like great memory, empathy, communication and intelligence can also be found at dogs. Since ancient times, the devotion and friendly nature of canines was appreciated. Some people say that wolves domesticated themselves without human intervention. A friendlier pack took advantage of nice people and a bond was created.

Dogs may have considered friendly humans as members of their packs, while humans may have seen dogs as family. Many remains from the meals of man are appreciated by canines and the best example can be bones. Today, people dress dogs and take them to salons.

The way dogs look and behave today did not come over night. The change happened genetically through selective breeding, during multiple generations. Because wolves became friendlier, they started to change their appearance gradually. People could distinguish between peaceful wolves and the ones that were more aggressive.

According to studies, the domestication of dogs took place a very long time ago and it was made slowly. Primitive canines started to become protective, friendly and to enjoy life among humans more and more. It is not known one hundred percent how everything happened, but it is sure that today dogs are the best friends of humans.
