Choosing The Right Canary Food Will Keep Your Pet Bird In Good Health

By Andrea Davidson

A pet bird requires a specific balance of nutrients in its diet to stay healthy. These needs can also vary amongst different species of birds. Many owners of canaries fail to ensure this, resulting in sickness and death. Feeding them the right canary food will ultimately keep the bird living longer, and happier, so it will sing more as well.

The biggest part of a canary's diet in the wild is seeds which vary seasonally, and they will also eat various plants, fruits, berries, and insects. This works to ensure a balanced diet, which is also important to domestic canaries that are kept as pets. These birds depend on their owners to provide them with an assortment of healthy and suitable foods.

Pre-packaged foods on the market usually contain a combination of 2 - 5 kinds of seeds. Often, the canaries will only eat those which they prefer and leave the rest, which can easily lead to malnutrition and sickness. While seeds are certainly a valuable part of a bird's diet, it is essential to provide them with other foods as well.

Perhaps the best feeding system are nutritionally complete pellets. It is recommended that this type of fare make up about 75-80% of their diet. These specially blended pellets are made of a mixture of crushed seeds and other nutrients, offering a single source of the many nutrients the bird needs. Some are formulated especially for birds with an illness or for a specific stage in life. It's advisable to introduce the bird to pellets at an early age or they may be hesitant to eat them.

The canary's seeds should be placed in a shallow feeding dish, if there is more than one bird, additional dishes need to be provided. Generally about 1-2 teaspoons of seed is enough for one day, there shouldn't be any excess left over. There must be fresh drinking water available at all times too, canaries have a high metabolism and need to drink often.

About 1/4 of the diet should consist of fruits and vegetables. Popular choices include lettuce, spinach, watercress, apples, grapes, and kernels of corn. Avocado is toxic to canaries and should never be given. These provide an excellent source of vitamins and minerals. All produce must first be washed thoroughly and then cut into manageable pieces the bird can peck at.

Birds enjoy the occasional treat. Healthy food eaten by humans such as meats, cheeses, and hard-boiled eggs are usually popular with canaries. When breeding them, a special blend of eggs and biscuits is recommended. There are also special bird snacks such as millet sprays or honey sticks which can be given as a special treat.

Normally a dietary supplement is not necessary if healthy, nutritionally balanced canary food is being provided, in particular the pellet kind. However, sometimes it is beneficial such as during egg laying, when extra calcium is required. These usually come in powdered form and are mixed in with the bird's food or water. In terms of supplying grit to aid in digestion, some birds do fine without it, but it doesn't hurt to offer it in a separate dish so it's available if the bird chooses to take it.
