A responsible Cavachon breeder will not leave you regretting your purchase. The breeding program will be geared for the best results of a low coat shedding Bichon Frise and Cavalier King Charles Spaniel mating. This toy dog crossbreed of two good natured breeds was first bred in 1996. Both parent breeds have a known history of being companion dogs.

Although a mix a designer dog breed is a deliberate creation to produce choice traits. The breeding of a Bichon indicates its low shedding coat is a key desired characteristic. A cross breed is generally more healthy as it has a less depleted gene pool than a pure breed.

Cavaliers have a recorded history of being the beloved household pets of the English aristocracy. Their 1956 arrival in America was entered into records. This toy breed has a well deserved reputation for being sweet natured. This gentle species is a pleaser. Aggression is not part of its temperament. Anyone looking for a guard dog will be disappointed in its hybrid descendent.

The breed standard has four colors and it is about 13 inches in height and between 13 and 18 lbs in weight. The four colors include a Tricolor with black markings broken up on a white base with some tan markings around the face and tail. The Blenheim hue has chestnut markings broken up on a white ground. There is a chestnut Ruby tone and a Black and Tan. The latter is coat of a jet shade with tan markings around the face, on the chest, legs, and tail. The coat is silky, wavy and even textured.

The Bichon Frise is an active small and muscular toy breed with a plumed tail. It has a friendly disposition also. It typical weight is around 11 lbs and height is around 12 inches. It is descended from Water Spaniels and Poodles in some combination. Spanish sailors enjoyed its companionship on their boats. Later, French royalty developed a liking for this friendly and affectionate species. Its dark eyes have a curious look that will be noticeable in Cavachons. The coat has 2 layers. The top layer is tightly curled with a rough texture. The undercoat is silky. The color is white, but cream, apricot and buff coloring may be seen in some parts of the body and on the ears. This is an active breed that needs to be exercised.

Cavachons range between 10 and 15 inches in height and between 10 and 25 pounds in weight. Being a hybrid, there could be some deviation. But, this will not be a broad deviation from the norm.

The coat shades are typically sable, tan, black, white or some combination of these colors. The texture is more like Cavaliers, but it will have shed less. Its brown eyes have an appealing expression. Life span will correspond to be around the same as that of the parent lines. This usually means somewhere in the range of 10 and 12 years. A first generation cross is more likely to possess the hair shedding trait of the Bichon Frise bloodline.

Expect to see shedding as puppy hair is replaced for adult hair. Combing is needed to avoid tangles. More frequent combing will mean less tangles and less time spent on this chore. Pet owners will find that a metal comb is an efficient untangling tool. Do not leave this pet alone for long. A responsible Cavachon breeder will provide you with a puppy you will be thankful for.
