How To Ensure That Your Horses Stay Fit

By Steven James

The best way to prevent horses from getting sick is by taking good care of them and ensuring that they always stay healthy. Stress is one of the causes of diseases and therefore something that must be minimized in our animals.

Even though most animals will seem to be stress-free and very playful, it is usual to find others which seem stressed and highly nervous. This stress if unchecked will usually cause an animal to develop: depression, ulcers and in some cases diarrhea. When left to go for long, stress will negatively affect the immunity of an animal making it likely to get sick.

When combating stress, one of the things that must be done is to provide your solitary horse with a companion. Another key thing to note is that patience will go a long way in ensuring that your animal remains healthy especially when riding or during training. A horse should also be exposed to fresh experiences gradually.

It is important that annual vet exams are carried out on your farm animals. This must be done regardless of whether the animal appears fine or not. Even though a horse may appear to be doing just fine, a vet exam may reveal that there is a lurking disease which should be taken care of.

Horses should be vaccinated annually in order to prevent them from getting some fatal diseases. Examples of such diseases are: West Nile virus, tetanus and influenza. In addition, there could be other diseases that you need to vaccinate your animals depending on where you live. A vet is the best person to disclose to you any such diseases.

Quality food will always go a long way in preventing disease. A key component of quality food is roughage. Hay and pasture carry high amounts of roughage and therefore should be fed daily to a horse. So as to ensure that you lay your hands on the best roughage, one should stay away from any kind of cheap or low-end feed.

One should file his horse's teeth on a regular basis. The reason why these teeth wear out unevenly is due to the same diet that these animals consume from day to day. The best way to take care of them is by calling a vet frequently to file them. It is during such times that any other issues arising from your animal's mouth will be taken care of.

One of the areas that should not be left behind when one is taking care of his horses are the hooves. When these hooves are damaged, it is practically impossible to ride her. Hoof care is to be done on a regular basis to prevent this. The best way to do this is by locating a good farrier and following a strict schedule.
