The Boston Terrier is an intelligent, playful little dog which makes a fun and spirited addition to any family. They are nicknamed "The American Gentleman" for their dapper appearance which resembles a man dressed in a tuxedo. This breed originates from Boston, Massachusetts and is derived from crossing an English Bulldog and a white English Terrier. Their earliest predecessors were larger in size and used primarily for pit-fighting. It is one of the few exclusively American breed dogs.

The appearance of the Boston Terrier is characterized by a small but muscular body, squarish head with pointed ears, wide-set eyes, and a short muzzle. Their coats consist of fine, short fur which can be black, brindle, or seal with white patches in color. On average they stand about 15-17 inches tall and weigh 12-25 pounds.

These happy pups are recognized as very affectionate and are known for their quirky antics. Smart and attentive, they typically train easily, however they can develop "small dog syndrome" if not shown sufficient direction and authority by their owners. They are gentle playmates for kids and usually have no problem to get along with other pets in the home. Housebreaking can sometimes pose a challenge, but can be accomplished with patience and a firm but gentle approach.

These small pups don't require a large amount of exercise and can be happy living most anywhere, city or country. They should however be walked once a day or allowed to play freely in a yard. Adequate physical and mental exercise is needed or the animal may get bored and suffer in its health.

With proper nutrition and veterinary care, Boston Terriers can live at least 12 years or more. They generally don't develop major health problems, but there are some conditions they are susceptible to, namely cataracts and other eye problems. Over-exertion during exercise is not advisable as these dogs tend to have breathing problems as a result of this.

This breed has a short, smooth coat of fur requires little in the way of grooming and does not have a strong odor. Only an occasional bath and brushing with a firm brush is needed. The face area, in particular the eyes need to be wiped with a cloth daily as well. Nail clipping is also necessary once in awhile. After the dog has been playing outside, the eyes and ears should be checked for grass seed lodged in them which can cause irritation. The ears also need to be inspected for ticks.

These fun and lively dogs are very family-oriented and are perfect companions for both young and old. They are always alert and attentive and make good watchdogs for the home as well as a cuddly lap dog. When choosing Boston Terriers puppies for sale, it's best to pick one that is friendly and calm rather than more aggressive or shy. Asking to meet one or both of the parents of the litter is also a good idea.
